Breed Standard

The Miniature Schnauzer is a robust, active dog of terrier type, resembling his larger cousin, the Standard Schnauzer, in general appearance, and of an alert, active disposition.

Size & Proportion

Sturdily built, nearly square in proportion, height from 12 to 14 inches. The withers form the highest point of the body.

Head & Expression

Strong and rectangular with keen, dark brown, oval eyes. Foreface is parallel to topskull with a slight stop.

Coat & Texture

Double, with hard, wiry outer coat and close undercoat. Head, neck, ears, chest, tail, and body coat must be plucked.

Official Colors

Recognized colors include Salt and Pepper, Black and Silver, and solid Black. All must have solid black noses.

Neck & Body

Neck is strong and well arched. Body is short and deep with a straight backline that declines slightly from withers to tail.

Temperament

Alert and spirited, yet obedient to command. Intelligent and willing to please, never overaggressive or timid.

The trot is the gait at which movement is judged. When approaching, the forelegs move straight forward with reach. Viewed from the side, the hind legs provide strong drive, illustrating a robust and active disposition.
